KING HUSSEIN INSTITUTE FOR BIOTECHNOLOGY AND CANCER

AMMAN, JORDAN

King Abdulla II of Jordan wanted to find a very creative, medium sized firm with a national reputation where the Principals of the firm would work directly with the King and the Secondary Foundation of Jordan to develop this unique Cancer City of Healing, in which Carlton E. DeWolff, of DeWolff Partnership Architects has been retained to design.

This city would be a small healing city, which consists of a 300-bed Cancer and Bio-Research center in honor of the King's father King Hussein. This "city" also incorporates a Specialized Hospital, Out-Patient Facility, Nurse's Residence Center, Senior Living Facility, Hotel, Auditorium and Convention Center.

DeWolff Partnership Architects created two zones. The hospital zone is four stories generally and at the opposite end are two stories of the main level for non-hospital functions. The main goal was to provide dignified care and entry for patients. An elliptical atrium space was created to allow patients and visitors to enter into an open-air plaza with trees and landscaped terrain.. It is like entering a Village square before you even enter a building. They become oriented and have time to acclimate themselves. They will be mixed in with the activities of others that are not hospital related, the hotel, dining, library, convention and research centers.
